Binary Opposition

If the whole of the 80’s was a debate between taste, knowledge and forces that conservatively wanted to go backwards or stay put, it was also a battle for accurate wording which failed. Binaries are everywhere. Male/Female, Punk vs. Hippie, Positive/Negative, Sweet/Sour, Smart/Stupid. Modern/Post-Modern.

This still goes on. I’ve heard people go to Target and ask for “Not-Modern.” What they actually mean to say is Retro or Post-Modern generic. Does that make them old-fashioned or merely evil because they have to match the stuff they got from Pottery Barn? Does “not-modern” mean anti-contemporary? Is there TV retro as well?
